Grandma

My brother introduced me to this hilarious and smart ad from the good people at Draft FCB Argentina. The ad is quite provocative with an old grandma getting killed in increasingly more ridiculous ways over and over again. Then the grandma continues to rise from the grave just to be brutally killed again. Then the punch line kicks and everything makes sense.

It is a perfect parody on excuses for a job searching website, and the ad is very well done. Everyone can relate to at least having thought of using the "My Grandma died" excuse to get out of something. It is pretty morbid, but it does the trick. No boss, teacher or superior can really argue with that excuse.

This ad is certainly memorable and relevant to the benefits of using the job search website. It is really well done.

My First Headline

Above is the headline that I wrote for BluePrintCleanse's Bridal Program Website, "His aisle, your runway". You can see the entire website here:

http://blueprintcleanse.com/bridal.html

This is the first headline I have ever written that has been used for marketing purposes. It was obviously outside of my comfort zone, but I gave it a shot, and I feel that the message conveys the style and brand of BluePrintCleanse.

The message is short. It empowers women and makes a bride to be feel like a supermodel.

Anyway, just thought I would take a week to show off.

You Down With UVP? Ya, You Know Me.

This Emirates Airlines TV spot "Hello Tomorrow" is amazing. It hits on all the reasons that people like to travel by showing the connections people make around the world. The story goes from character to character and shows off beautiful landscapes, awesome parties, adventure and of course attractive people. What is interesting about his ad for an airline is that there is not one shot of people actually in an airplane or an airplane at all. The only mode of transportation in the entire ad is a bus that doesn't look like it has air conditioning. This is to show that it isn't about the actual airline it is about where you are going.

The target audience for this commercial is the young professional vagabond or the adventure traveler.

The brand is an airline for people who want to experience something new and see more of the world.

The features are all the amazing places and the people you can meet if you fly with Emirates.

The benefits are the things that can be done when you travel and the people you  meet.

The Unique Value Propostion (UVP) is Emirates airlines will bring you to new places and experiences to make connections with people and the world.

The words in red are some words that probably led to this ads execution. The main two probably being "connections" and "new experiences". Here are some more words that may have been used:

Photography
Business
Love
Fashion
Party
Art
Cities
Tourism
Adventure
Backpacking

This Blog Is BIG

Every spring I look forward to sunny weather, flowers, girls in sundresses, ice cream and the NBA Playoffs. The NBA always delivers some interesting commercials for the tournament to decide who is the best basketball team in the world will be.

For example:

Trophy Love:

Talking Basketball:

And my favorite, Where Will Amazing Happen This Year?:

I loved the Where Will Amazing Happen This Year? ads that had been preceded by the greatest NBA ad campaign ever "Where Amazing Happens". The scenes they chose were epic and look great in black and white. They capture the emotion of the game and show that moment that fans wait all year to see. It really gets the audience pumped for the playoffs.

This year the NBA brought us something BIG:

It keeps with the tradition of tweaking the season long ad campaign and the ad looks cool. The quick text on the screen is interesting to read and the story is in your face. Basketball looks really cool in slow motion, and this year they are focusing on stars like Kobe and Lebron who also has his own BIG playoffs spot.  I'm excited to see what the NBA busts out for the Finals commercial this year. I hope they expand on the something BIG with actual moments of finals past like they have done in the past.

Absolut Weird

To the best of my knowledge, Absolut Vodka is the only current sponsor of the Salt Flats Robotic Dog Racing League. A bold commercial from a vodka company that is trying to separate from the well drinkers and appeal to people who are willing to spend some extra money for a weird and awesome style vodka that is perfect to drink out in the desert when watching robot dogs being controlled by DJs race each other.

The endorsement from Sedish House Mafia and the overall Hunger Games like scene in the commercial appeals to a younger crowd who enjoy clubs, high fashion and being a part of the upper class scene. These are not the type of people who have 9-5 jobs and go to their local dive bar for a beer and a shot for five bucks.

Absolut went full throttle weird in this very detailed and action packed story commercial. This is more of a micro movie with the robotic greyhounds. There are many layers to the characters in the short time we get to meet them and judge their bizarre choice of recreation, clothing and hair styles.

I like this commercial. It seems to stick in my head because it is so strange. The music is fast paced and fits the wild scene of the dog racing and the characters. It is one of those commercials that makes you stop and watch because you want to know what is going on with these strange people, and why can't I go to any fancy robot dog racing parties and drink vodka?

An Advertising Blog is Born!

Google+ New Dad

I think it is appropriate to start this advertising blog with my thoughts, opinion's and one-liners about the current state of the advertising world with the Google+ New Dad ad. This was the first ad that came to mind when thinking about what recent advertisement had reached me. I remember seeing this ad and being a little too concerned that this guy would not get his phone back with all his baby pictures on it. And then when the he realizes that he didn't lose any of those pictures thanks to Google keeping copies of his pictures for him, I actually felt happy for him and wanted to cheer.

This ad is great because it tells a good a relatable story. Everyone has lost a phone that has had some important number or photos on it, and it sucks. You just assume that those memories are gone. Now that our lives are stored in the computers in our pockets, knowing that losing your phone doesn't mean that our past memories are gone is a great relief. It is still pretty annoying to lose a phone though.

I also think it is interesting that the ad has very little video. It is mostly just still photos that tell the story and the narrator. Although this doesn't follow the exact proven method of having a model hold the product in advertising. I guess a good alternative when a model isn't appropriate is to use a cute baby.
